Kentucky’s Youth Spearhead Policy Change and Help Pass a Social Host Ordinance

Community participation is an established approach to addressing health care issues associated with underage drinking. Getting the community involved in program design and implementation is integral to helping ensure the strategies are appropriate and acceptable to the community and its youth. This approach was at the core of the McLean County High School Champions Against Drugs (CAD) effort to establish a social host ordinance in McLean County Kentucky. With the assistance of the McLean County Community Coalition (MCCC), the CAD overcame many challenges to create an ordinance that can serve as a tool for law enforcement in their efforts to deter underage drinking in their county.
