The 12 Steps of AA

Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) outlines a 12-step program to help members achieve and maintain sobriety. The steps are:

  1. Admit you are powerless over alcohol and that your life has become unmanageable. Recognize the extent of your addiction.
  2. Believe that a Power greater than yourself can restore your sanity. Have faith in a higher power.
  3. Make the decision to turn your will and life over to the care of God as you understand Him. Surrender control to your higher power.
  4. Make a searching and fearless moral inventory of yourself. Take accountability for past wrongs.
  5. Admit to God, to yourself, and to another human being the exact nature of your wrongs. Confess without reservation.
  6. Become entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character. Prepare for improvement.
  7. Humbly ask Him to remove your shortcomings. Seek help from your higher power.
  8. Make a list of all persons you have harmed and become willing to make amends to them all. Identify who you need to reconcile with.
  9. Make direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others. Repair harm done to others if safe.
  10. Continue to take personal inventory and when wrong, promptly admit it. Regularly examine your actions and admit mistakes.
  11. Seek through prayer and meditation to improve your conscious contact with God as you understand Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for you and the power to carry that out. Strengthen your spiritual connection.
  12. Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, try to carry this message to other alcoholics and practice these principles in all your affairs. Help others by sharing your experience.
